Salif Keita
Salif Keita was born on August 25, 1940, into a noble family in Mali. His desire to venture into music forced him into rejection by his father who believed that people of their social stature should not be practicing music. His albinism condition made things more difficult for him, as the condition was viewed as one that brings misfortune. He left home at the age of 18 to pursue his music career and against all odds, emerged one of the most successful and influential musicians to emerge from Africa. As a response to his unpleasant experiences related to being an albino, Salif Keita founded the Keita Global Foundation, in 2005. The organization is dedicated to raising awareness on the challenges of albinos and to ensure that albinos get equitable treatment in all societies.
